How To Make Plum Marzipan And Pistachio Pastries

My goodness!  It’s November already.  How did that happen? Time seems to be whizzing by at the moment. My baby boy has just turned two and is looking less like a baby everyday.  I have also recently brought a funky outfit for my seven year in Gap that I would actually wear myself!  I’m hoping this is a sign she is suiting a more grown up style of clothes rather than me pretending I’m younger than I am. It was just a jumper and jeans, but still. I do wish I had a remote control for my life sometimes so I could rewind or slow things down.  It’s funny because I don’t remember life passing a such a rate when I was a child, but there was a key point when everything changed.   The year that Christmas arrived and I was panicking because I needed more time was a year that I have not forgotten.  And to be fair, every year is the same now. I have clear memories of opening the first door of my advent calender and wishing each day that I was opening door 24, but it took so long to arrive.  Now door 24 comes around in the blink of an eye.

So this week with the cold weather and a few of us in my family feeling a little under the weather I decided to make my favorite comfort food treat.  These little beauties are a delight, and with marzipan as one of the ingredients they will definitely promote some Christmas spirit.  They can be eaten at pretty much any time of day and make a super addition to the Christmas breakfast table.  So easy to put together, they really are no effort at all, but the clever thing here is that they look much more complicated than they are.   You can freeze them once cooked and once defrosted warm them up in the oven for a quick couple of mins before serving.  Domestic goddess points are almost guaranteed! You might even find that you have a few of these ingredients in your cupboard already especially if you have plans to make a Christmas pudding or cake.

Plum Marzipan and Pistachio Pastries


  • 320g ready to roll puff pastry
  • 175g marzipan
  • 2 tbsp of creme fraiche
  • 2 tsp orange blossom water
  • 5 plums stoned and sliced
  • 6 tbsp of plum jam
  • 25g dark chocolate chips
  • 25g chopped pistachio nuts

How to make Plum Marzipan and Pistachio Pastries

  • Preheat the oven to 200c/gas 6
  • Lay pastry out keeping it on the plastic sheet that it is rolled up in.  Cut 16 medium squares and place on a baking tray lined with non stick paper
  • Add the marzipan, orange blossom water and creme fraiche to food processor and mix until a smooth paste is formed
  • Spread a layer of the plum jam on each square.  Be careful no cover the whole square leaving a rough 2 cm boarder around the edge.  This is to stop the toppings sliding off when in the oven
  • Then spread a layer of the marzipan paste on top of the jam and top this with a sprinkle of chocolate chips
  • cover with a couple of the plum slices on each and then sprinkle some chopped pistachio on top
  • Place in the oven and cook for 20 mins
